Relational/Couples Counselling

Strong romantic relationships are sustained by emotional connection; feeling seen, heard, understood, and valued by your partner. Ongoing conflict in a relationship is often rooted in feelings of disconnection, brought about when our emotional experiences are miscommunicated or misunderstood.

Relational/Couples Counselling

Reasons couples come to counselling:

  • Pre-marital support
  • Differences in personality or communication style
  • Challenges with sexual relationship
  • Infidelity
  • Parenting challenges
  • Support with blending families
  • Perinatal loss
  • Challenging relationships with extended family
  • Cultural differences

How Therapy Can Help

My approach to working with couples is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which involves exploring negative emotions, patterns of behaviour, and how these contribute to difficulties in the relationship. Couples are supported to engage with their own emotions, those of their partner, and to learn new ways of interacting that reduce stress and support connection.

How It Works (Steps)

The first session is an in-person, joint Intake Session where both members of the couple are present. The purpose is to gather information on your shared perspective of your concerns, to determine goals for the work, and to establish ‘ground rules’ for future sessions.

Each partner will attend one private Individual Session without the other present. Content to be explored during these sessions will be discussed during the joint Intake Session. In some cases, additional individual work may be recommended. Virtual attendance is an option for Individual Sessions; they are billed at the Individual Therapy rate.

Following your Individual Sessions, Couples Sessions will resume; goals for the work will be confirmed and a plan of action established. An important part of this process is the active engagement of each partner, both in session and at home between sessions. All Couples Sessions take place in-person.
