Did you know that anxiety and anger are often connected? Anxiety is a response to a perceived threat (from hearing criticism to being in physical danger). Anger is also a response to threat; it is coupled with feelings of irritation and frustration. Both share the same origin/root word, “angh-*”, which means “tight, constricted, painful”. When we consider that both emotions cause physical symptoms by releasing powerful hormones, like cortisol and adrenaline, into your bloodstream, that can result in the ‘fight or flight’ response, this becomes clear.
Both anger and anxiety are part of being human; we all experience them sometimes. Both can be triggered by everyday experiences, and both can be either improved or worsened by your thought patterns (like thinking we are not ‘good enough’). Under normal circumstances, these symptoms resolve quickly. If you’re experiencing them over a more prolonged period, it may be time to seek support.
During anxious or angry moments, you’re likely to experience
- Low energy/feeling exhausted
- Racing thoughts
- Chest tightness
- Rapid heartbeat
- Clenched or tight muscles (often in the jaw and/or shoulders)
- Difficulty with concentration/memory
- Gastrointestinal symptoms
- Tension headaches
- Difficulty falling/staying asleep
